Who does what in the UCSB Recycling Network?

Associated Students Recycling Program

The ASRP services the 72+ outdoor recycling clusters by bicycle and cart. As well as running the outdoor recycling, ASRP focuses on waste awareness outreach through the UCSB campus and at other schools. ASRP has also worked with Associated Students Legislative Council, and the University's Administration to promote and encourage recycling, waster reduction, and the purchase of recycled materials. ASRP is also in charge of providing blue clip-on containers for office pack recycling, to any persons/departments on campus who requests them. The blue clip-ons are to be dumped into the larger green office pack recycling containers, which are in turn serviced by the custodians. To request blue clip-on containers please contact us!!! The program is also currently working on a pilot program in which cell-phones, CDs, diskettes and printer cartridges are handled and recycled. Please see the Update section for more info regarding this.

Physical Facilities

The Custodial Department will take your "office pack" from the green office pack recycling containers in main office areas or copy rooms to a blue locked "office pack" dumpster. These dumpsters are locked for three safety reasons: · For security of documents, since shredded documents do not recycle well. (However 100% security cannot be guaranteed) · So contaminants will not be thrown into dumpster · For fire security

University Center (UCen) Operations

UCen operations provides and services recycling bins for glass, aluminum/plastic, newspaper, and office pack inside the UCen and Associated Students building. Cardboard, metal, and furniture is also recycled within the UCen when remodeling. A UCen employee recycling committee was formed to promote recycling within the UCen.

Central Stores

By stocking recycled products wherever feasible, the UCSB storehouse promotes the purchase of recycled products, thereby completing the loop on recycling. Bids require suppliers to quote recycled products and publications highlight such items. Prices have been reduced recently to stimulate their sales. The Furniture Services division of Central Stores handles the disposal of surplus property for the University and attempts to divert as much as possible away from the landfill. A metal recycling bin captures the items with metal content, most other equipment is sold to scrap buyers and all pallets and cardboard boxes are picked up by a recycler.
